With the threat of asbestos fibers and the cancers that they can cause, many people are becoming increasingly worried that they may have had fatal exposure to asbestos. Most of us have been exposed to asbestos at some point in our lives. Because it’s in the air we breathe and the water we drink, it’s almost impossible to avoid. But most people are not exposed to it enough for it to become a risk or cause any harm. However, those who work in environments where asbestos is present, or those that work with asbestos directly, are very much more at risk. If you’re such a person, or someone who is worried that they may have suffered from overexposure to asbestos, here are some early symptoms of asbestos cancer that you can look for.
Because asbestos fibers get into the lungs, it’s mostly lung symptoms that will show up if someone has been overexposed. These symptoms include things such as shortness of breath, wheezing, hoarseness, or a cough that lasts for several weeks. If there is any blood found in the mucus after coughing, this could also mean that asbestos cancer is present. Feeling a pain or tightening of the chest is also common with asbestos cancer and a swelling in the face or neck might also be present. Also, common signs of illness such as fatigue, weight loss, or loss of appetite might also be seen with asbestos cancer.
It’s very important for anyone experiencing these symptoms to tell their doctor about it right away. Asbestos cancer can be treated if found early enough and many times all that’s needed for diagnosis is a chest x-ray.
